Death above the
fireplace.
Excerpt from the book:
“Maurice would never know that the
Lee-Enfield WW1 rifle that he
marched with as a school cadet, was
the very one that killed his father.
Maurice would never know that the
Lee-Enfield rifle that he bought as an
adult and hunted so thrillingly with,
was me yet again, the rifle that killed
his
father. Maurice would also never know that as I lie on this fireplace mantel
in front of seventy relaxing joy-filled humans, with rain drops periodically
leaking through the roof and dripping onto me, I have witnessed this
entire story across the family. That story so deep into killing, touches into
three different centuries, and spans four generations.
I, The Rifle and killer of humans, beasts and creatures, have now
finished telling my story.
I The Rifle, now rusting and dying can feel human-like joy for the
first time, and I cannot wait to die myself.”
